Leatherwork Tool Supply was established in 2020 with the goal of offering leathercrafters of all skill levels quality leatherworking handtools. Currently, we are focusing our product line on vintage Craftool brand leather stamps and handtools (more information about MADE IN THE USA Vintage Craftool Leather Stamps and Handtools here). As we grow, we will expand our product selection to include leathercraft tools and supplies from other quality suppliers.
Leatherwork Tool Supply was founded by Dana Jones, a 50 year veteran of working with leather of which from about 1975 until 2019 were spent working for Tandy Leather in various capacities store store manager (North Hollywood, San Leandro and Fresno California), market manager, buyer, national advertising manager and eCommerce manager (all in Fort Worth Texas).
My love of leathercraft began in 1970 when my friend received a "Let's Do Modern Leathercraft - In The Style of the Old West" kit for Christmas...
...and he showed me how to dampen the leather and use the Craftool stamps to make designs and how to make some of the projects in the kit and that was all it took - I was hooked!
At the time, the packaging look was a little outdated for some (especially in light of the "hippie", "nature-tand", or "creative stamping" style leather tooling that was hugely popular at the time), but for others, the creative packaging design looked inspiring and made you want to give leathercraft a try. The kit came in a sturdy, full-color box that displayed finished examples of the leathercraft kits and Craftool stamps that were included. One of the beauties of the Craftool stamps and swivel knife that came in the kit was that they were extremely versatile and could be used for many styles of leather carving, tooling or stamping. A generation of leathercrafters got their start in a lifelong, fulfilling hobby (and maybe business) with one of Tandy Leather's "Let's Do Modern Leathercraft - In The Style of the Old West" kits!
Much of the leatherwork I did during my Tandy Leather store manager years involved creating finished samples of the kits and patterns we sold, teaching in-store leathercraft classes, giving leathercraft demonstrations at schools, camps and hospitals.
But leatherworking has also given me the opportunity to make handcrafted gifts for my wife and our eight children. I'll be adding photos of personal projects in the future.
Being involved with leathercrafting and the leathercrafting community just about my whole life has given me a huge appreciation for the creativity, beauty and functionality of a finished leathercraft project and the passion and enjoyment the hobby of leathercraft inspires!
